As long as you know what they are doing, you're good. The pans move according to which side is heavier and which is lighter. I record a guitar riff into my interface/computer. Et voilà! Be deliberate about your choices or just trust your ears.

An analytical balance now contains a load cell that is displaced when weight is placed on top of the pan. Both are useful.
